Why MrBeast?

  • Finding suitable materials for listening and speaking activities is challenging for teaching English as a foreign language.

  • Movies are too long and are generally passive activities as little time is left for activities. The language level is too high. Even watching with subtitles, the English just becomes background noise.

  • Videos at the end of term are not meaningful or engaging for language learning. They are most often ‘filler’, and they do not require much interaction or analysis.

  • Netflix programs are hard to manage for time and content, and they are not accessible to everyone outside the classroom. There is also a lack of continuity if only one episode is watched.

  • MrBeast videos are short and entertaining, which leaves enough time for language study and discussion. The level of language and vocabulary is much closer to the student’s ability.

  •  They are easy to access on YouTube, and each video is standalone. There are several channels, each different with their own appeal. In particular, Beast Reacts and Beast Philanthropy are well suited for foreign language classrooms.

In Less Than Five Sentences

  • MrBeast's past, present, and future content can be used for educational purposes, changing passive consumption to an active way of studying English.
  • Specifically, it can be used to teach English to non-native speakers and serve as a form of edutainment, particularly with three separate demographics: elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school.
  • This can incentivize language learning and provide opportunities for cross-cultural studies with Beast Philanthropy, and funny and cool English with Beast Reacts.
  • Finally, testing these teaching material and activities in a small-scale pilot program here in Japan could serve as a model or base which can be adapted in other countries.

Where are my cookies?

Here, there and everywhere, MrBeast promises cookies. Like, subscribe, vote in a poll, etcetera.  I've done all that and not a single cookie. Are the supposed to come automatically or do we have to pick them up? Either way is fine with me. Just let me know.   where are my cookies

What do you want to watch?

For now, the plan is to keep using Beast Philanthropy to give students a little more cultural awareness. Instead of choosing for the students they were allowed to vote on which video they wanted to watch.

He is so interesting

MrBeast's content received positive feedback from both teachers and students. When asked to choose their preferred Beast Philanthropy videos, teachers were surprised to see students gravitate towards those highlighting third-world countries.

It was also surprising that 99% of the students had never heard of MrBeast before, but they were impressed by his generosity. They noted that there is no one in Japan doing philanthropic activities at that level. After watching the videos, many students expressed a desire to do something similar in the future.

What's next?

Since the students are familiar with heavy rain and flooding here in Japan, 'We Built Houses for Homeless Families' was the next choice.

The majority of students found the video interesting, impressive, or moving. While some were wondering, 'Only 10 houses, what good is that?'  In any case, it was interesting to see the scope of the reactions. You can see the reading practice print here.

Where to begin?

Lesson 2 of the 2nd years students' textbook, My Way II features the story of Boyan Slat, in 'A New Way to Clean Up the Ocean' so 'I Cleaned the World’s Dirtiest Beach #TeamSeas' from the Beast Philanthropy channel is a perfect match.

While Slat's story is interesting, it's difficult to imagine the whole situation simply from the text. In addition, the students must study the grammar presented in the text.

So, it is refreshing for students to watch a video related to what they're studying in the textbook. You can see the reading practice print here.

I don't know what a MrBeast is...

Sometime in September I was scrolling through Twitter and saw this...

What about students here, in Japan? I asked about a hundred or so and not one knew what a MrBeast was.
